Sinhagad means Lion’s fort. The meaning of Sinha is Lion and gad means Fort. Sinhagad fort is previously known as Kondhana. In the battle of Sinhagad fought by Maratha Sardar Tanaji Malusare in 1670, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj named the fort Sinhagad in the memories of Sardar Tanaji. There is a famous saying as “Gad Aala pan Sinha Gela (गड आला पण सिंह गेला)” which means I got the fort (Sinhagad) but I lost my Lion (referred to Sardar Tanaji Malusare).
