Lingana Fort was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1648 to strengthen the defense of the central Konkan region against the Sidis. During the Maratha rule, it served as a penal settlement, where prisoners were kept in rock-cut dungeons…some large enough to hold up to 50 inmates. The fort remained under Maratha control until 1818, when it was captured by Colonel Prother during the British campaign against the Maratha Empire.
