Kokan is the western coastal side of India. The western side of Sahyadri mountain range of the Indian states Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka is known as Kokan. The word Kokan is a mixture of two words. ‘Kona’ means corner and ‘Kana’ means part (Kokan=kona+kana). In Marathi language this region is known as Kokan (कोकण). In Konkani language they say Konkan (कोंकण). Both, Konkan and Kokan, spellings are correct in the respective language. In Kannada language it is known as Karāvalli. It means coast.

Both the spellings are correct. ‘Kokan’ is used in Marathi language and is widely accepted. ‘Konkan’ is used in Konkani language.
