Korigad fort Location is near Aamby Valley City, situated south of Lonavala. The distance from Lonavala To Korigad fort is about 25 km. Korigad is also known as Koraigad, Koarigad, or Kumwarigad. It is a hill fort in Pune district, Maharashtra. Korigad fort’s History goes back to the 16th century. It is commonly accepted that the construction of the Korigad fort happened in 1500. Korigad Trek is easy for beginners as the height of the fort is merely 923m from sea level. Aamby Valley Air Strip makes it easy to locate Korigad on the Maharashtra map. Korigad Stairs Base Point is approx. 5km away from the closest village, Peth Shahapur.

Things to remember before going to Korigad:

Google map will show you the route to korigad fort from Aamby Valley township. If you follow this route, you may need to take the detour. The security guard may deny you entering through this route if you tell them you are heading to Korigad. 

Lonavala is the nearest railway staton to Korigad fort. Public transport is available from Lonavala to Peth Shahapur, the base village. You can head towards Aamby Valley from Lonavala to reach Korigad. 

There is limited mobile network available for almost all the companies. Nearest ATM can be found in Lonavala. Make sure you carry enough cash for the emergencies.

Korigad fort History

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured Korigad along with nearby Lohagad, Visapur, Tung, and Tikona in 1657. In the treaty of Purandar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj kept a total of 12 forts in the Maratha Empire. Korigad was one of them. It shows the strategic importance of the fort. In March 1818, after a prolonged battle, the British won this fort from the Marathas.

Korigad fort Location

Korigad fort is located on the northwest side of Pune, near Aamby Valley city. Korigad fort’s distance from Pune is around 75 km. The fastest route from Pune to Korigad is through Lonavala which takes around 2 hours by car. Korigad fort’s distance from Mumbai is around 107 km. Standing 923m from seal level, Korigad fort is around 200m higher than the surrounding area. You will find two lakes on the top of the Korigad fort and ahead of them are two caves.

How to reach Korigad fort

Going by a personal vehicle would be a wise decision to visit Korigad. An ample amount of parking is available near the Bus stop. Lonavala to Korigad fort distance is about 25km. Google Maps will come in handy to locate the base village and Korigad Fort Trek starting point. Head towards Aamby valley from Lonavala till the base village, Peth Shahpur. There are 2 different routes to reach the top of Korigad. The right-side route via Ambavne village will take you to Aamby Valley township. It’s challenging to pass through the security gate if you’re specifically heading to Korigad Fort from Aamby Valley township.

The commonly used route to reach Korigad Fort:

From Lonavala head towards Peth Shahapur village. Park your vehicle near the S.T. Bus stop or small water tank (18.629247, 73.380997).

Your hike will start from the tall mobile/ electric tower. If you continue through this route, you will get another tower on the way. After that the flat area will end and the jungle area will start. You must pass through this jungle and reach the Korigad Stairs Base Point (18.621965, 73.386849).

From here you need to climb almost 600 steps to reach the top of the Korigad. In this route, there are many scenic viewpoints. On rainy days, water flows from these stairs. This is a treat for the eyes.
Midway to the stairs, there is a cave named “Gupt Gufa (Hidden Cave)”. You will find a lord Ganesha temple nearby. Once you climb all the stairs, you will enter through Ganesh Darvaja, the main entrance gate to Korigad Fort.

Places to see on Korigad fort

After entering through Ganesh Darwaaja (Peth Shahpur route), you can see the Korai Devi temple. The local communities have recently renovated it with 3m tall Deepmala. There are other temples also available of the God Vishnu and Shiva. You will find a Ganesha temple in the mid way of your hike. The main attraction of the fort is the peripheral wall to the fort is in a very good state. The entry gate of Korigad is also well preserved. You can find older structures of the fort along with the largest Laxmi Toph and other 5 cannons near Korai Devi temple.

Korigad fort Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Korigad fort would be monsoon. Korigad is popular for weekend getaways. In the rainy days, the water flowing through the steps looks really pleasant. If you are lucky enough, you may see a reverse waterfall on one of the fort’s side. You can visit Korigad fort throughout the year. A night trek to Korigad fort in the summertime is also popular. You can camp at the top of the Korigad fort. 3 temples on the top of the fort can be a good shelter to camp. Around 25 people can easily spend a night in Korai Devi temple situated at the top of Korigad.

Attractions near Korigad Fort Trek

You can see Pawna Lake and Mula River from the Korigad. There are many hill forts available in the area such as Anghai fort, Tung fort, Ghangad fort, and Tikona fort. Beautiful views of Aambey Valley Township and lush greenery in the surrounding are the main attractions of Korigad trek.
