Start the Sinhagad trek at early morning from the Thoptewadi village. You will enter through Pune Darvaja. Take left from the next door and start exploring the fort. There is a Canon on the Kalavantinicha Buruj. From here you will get a beautiful view of the lush green hills. Spend a whole day on the fort. Explore everything. Enjoy the delicious Pithal Bhakar. Take a nap if you want under a tree. And after 3 PM or so start descend. The plan is to spend the evening at Khadakwasla Lake. The sunset at Khadakwasla Lake is really refreshing. And that’s what all about my plan for the Sinhagad fort trek.

A hill fort in Malshej Ghat, Harishchandragad is one of the most difficult forts in Maharashtra. The area comes under the Kalsubai Harishchandragad wildlife sanctuary. There are major three routes for the Harishchandragad trek. Although it is one of the toughest treks in Maharashtra, the difficulty level is subjective and depend on the trek route. Paachnai, Khireshwar and Walhivare (Belpada) are 3 base villages for this trek.

    • The distance of Harishchandragad from Pune is 118 km.
    • The distance between Harishchandragad and Mumbai is 138 km.
    • The distance of Harishchandragad from Nashik is 105 km.
    • From Ahmednagar, Harishchandragad is around 125 km away.

Kokankada is an overhung cliff on the massive Harishchandragad fort. Kokankada is on the west side of the fort facing the Kokan area. That is the reason this cliff is known as Kokankada.

Interesting Fact: Base jumper Nikolas Winter jumped from the Kokankada wearing his wingsuit in Jan 2017. This jump is considered the first wingsuit base jump in Maharashtra. (Source: Youtube-Rohit Vartak Climb & Slack)

    1. Swargate-Katraj-Khed Shivapur- Sinhagad Fort
    2. Swargate-Khadakwasla-Sinhagad Fort

I will recommend you to take the Khadakwasla route, as you can spend some time near the Khadakwasla Lake.

Thoptewadi is the base village for the Sinhagad trek. From here you can start your trek. And you will ultimately enter through Pune Darvaja.

There is another route to go to Sinhagad fort which is from Kalyan Darvaja. This route is much easier.

Other than that, if you have a private vehicle then you can directly go to the fort. There is well built parking area.

Apart from that there are two main ways to climb Sinhagad Fort. One is from Pune Darvaja and another is through Kalyan Darvaja. Sinhagad trek through Pune Darvaja is little difficult and time consuming compared to Kalyan Darvaja route. Sinhagad fort trekking is for the people of all ages. I have seen many kids and elderly aged people during my trail to Sinhagad. So pick your route and have fun on your Sinhagad fort trekking.
